What Can Small Teams Achieve with Everything DiSC®? (Spoiler Alert: A Lot!)

“Small businesses can’t afford to spend time and money on workplace culture or leadership development!”

This is one of the biggest myths about workplace professional development. I hear it all the time: meaningful team-building and leadership development are reserved for large organizations with big training budgets. But in my experience, some of the most impactful transformations happen within the small businesses—especially when teams unlock the power of tools like Everything DiSC®. After all, every employee in a small business significantly impacts the team and culture!

Recently, I had the privilege of guiding the fantastic team at Holloway Media Services (HMS) through their DiSC assessments. And let me tell you, their results were inspiring!

The Power of Understanding Your Team’s Unique Styles

Everything DiSC® breaks down behavior into four key styles: Dominance (D), Influence (i), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). When small teams clearly understand each other’s DiSC styles, it immediately shifts the way they collaborate and communicate.

With HMS, each team member learned about their own workplace tendencies, strengths, and—perhaps most importantly—the areas where they might face challenges. I guided their conversation as they learned about their styles, so that the awareness could spark open discussions. The team quickly discovered why they naturally worked well together, and how their unique differences actually complemented each other perfectly—like pieces of a puzzle fitting together. 🧩

We’re Already Working “Fine.” What Would My Team Gain?

For HMS, the benefits of this newfound clarity were immediate:

  • Better Collaboration: Knowing each other’s styles helped the team communicate clearly and effectively, reducing friction and confusion.
  • Higher Trust: Understanding each other’s differences built empathy and stronger interpersonal connections.
  • More Effective Problem-Solving: Recognizing the strengths of each style allowed the team to leverage individual skills when challenges arose.
  • Improved Service to Clients: With stronger internal alignment, the team could deliver services with even greater clarity, purpose, and effectiveness.

Heather Holloway and her team described the session as an “absolute game-changer,” highlighting the powerful shift that can happen when we truly understand one another.

Why DiSC? Does My Team Really Need It?

At JKirley Collective, I advocate for Everything DiSC® because it’s accessible, scalable, and—most importantly—effective. It empowers small businesses by providing the kind of insights typically reserved for larger corporations, leveling the playing field, and giving them the tools they need to create thriving workplace cultures. (And remember, a good “workplace culture” means less burnout, less turnover, and happier employees!)

Everything DiSC® is perfect for small teams, because it also removes the judgement. There is no “right” DiSC prolife, just as there is no “wrong” way to have a personality. What if everyone has the same styles? What if one person is the “odd one out” in the way their DiSC profile shows up? Exploring the DiSC profiles opens the door to effective conversations, empowering your team, and improving productivity.

Small teams often juggle multiple roles, rapid change, and intense pressure. This makes clear communication, emotional intelligence, and effective collaboration even more critical. DiSC isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a strategic necessity that helps small teams do big things.
